Listening pack, version 2

Pick a path and work down the page

You pick which of three descriptions is closest to how you will be listening, and the page shows you the parts for that path. It changes which parts you see, not what the sounds are.

Before you start

Headphones, volume, one sitting

Use headphones, or speakers you trust. Set the volume on the first item and then leave it alone for the rest of the pack. Work in one sitting if you can.

Fill in the four boxes at the top, including what you are listening on. They are part of the answer rather than paperwork.

The order, and the one rule

Work down the page in the order it gives you. The order is fixed and it is the same for everybody, which is the only reason two people's answers can be compared at all.

Do not revise an earlier part after hearing a later one.

A later part will sometimes make you think you now understand an earlier one. That feeling is not new information about what you heard, and an answer edited in its light is worth less than the answer you gave first. If you want to say that you changed your mind, say it in the last box and leave the earlier answer alone.

Listen before you reason. Report what you hear. If two things sound the same to you, say so. If they sound different, say that. Neither answer is worth more than the other. Every question has an honest way to say the question cannot be answered, and choosing it is a real answer rather than a failure to finish.

Your path

Which description is closest to how you will be listening?

The three descriptions are three professions, not three seats. Other people in your profession are working through the same page, and how many answer on any of the three paths is not fixed and is not balanced by design.

Your answers are read beside theirs, and beside the other professions' only where the question put to both was the same.

Trouble

If something goes wrong

01

A sound will not play. Wait a moment and press play again; each item loads only when you ask for it. If one item will not play at all, leave its questions blank, note the label in the last box, and carry on. Do not guess in place of an item you could not hear.

02

You have to stop partway. Close the tab. Your draft is kept in that browser on that machine, so open the same link in the same browser and it will still be there. It does not travel to another machine or another browser, so finish on the one you started on.

03

The download button does not work. Use the copy button beside it, which puts the whole file on your clipboard, and paste it into an email. A copied file is worth exactly as much as a downloaded one.

04

Your answers look like they are gone. The counter at the bottom shows how many answers are stored. If it reads zero on a page you have already worked on, the browser has cleared the draft, which happens with private windows and with some settings that clear site data on close. Do not try to reconstruct it from memory; say so and start again in a normal window.

05

A question assumes something false, or cannot be answered honestly as written. Answer it with the option that says you cannot tell, and then write what was wrong with it in the last box.

Something interrupts you in the middle of a part. Finish the item you are on, then take the break between parts rather than inside one.
