Eigenia Labs

Take part.

Eigenia's research is open, and so is the work behind it. Join a working group, hold or fund a fellowship, or sponsor a lab.

Working groups

Join a working group. There is no fee.

Each working group carries one line of Eigenia's research. Members contribute, and the work they move forward becomes papers and publications.

Leading a group

A member whose role it is can lead a working group: setting its cadence, its outcomes and its publication lines.

What members do

  • Attend meetings to move concepts forward, and perhaps apply them
  • Contribute to papers
  • Work with other members to advance the theories the group pursues
  • Co-author papers and publications
  • Attend conferences

    Cyber Risk Underwriting

We price cyber-physical risk on industrial assets so that an underwriter can sign the result. The papers here carry the COPE framework into cyber-physical property, derive Single Loss Expectancy and Annualized Loss Expectancy from a joined BIM and BOM asset register, and score failure modes with a quantitative cyber-physical FMECA. Extreme value copulas set the correlated catastrophic solvency case, and reliability and safety critical item lists give reinsurance something to attach to. Market observations and a concept of operations keep the mathematics tied to what insurers actually buy.

    Digital Twin Architecture

This group sets out the eight-layer cyber digital twin and the physics that has to hold inside it. Papers here formalize the layers and their coupling, run symplectic integrators that conserve energy in substation models, and build invariant energy observers for converter-dominated distribution grids. The Fooled by Best Practice series argues the epistemology behind the architecture: why a record of what did not fail is not evidence, and where simulation belongs against physics. Tier classification, common-mode failure and high-density liquid cooling connect the model to the plant it mirrors.

    Operator Decision and Human Factors

We study what the person in the control room can actually do while a cyber-physical event is running, and what has to be taken off them. The papers measure cognitive saturation under alarm floods with topic entropy and dynamic Bayesian networks, catalog the heuristics an attacker can exploit in a security decision, and set RACI ownership against the gap between the security, facilities and engineering functions. A write-access trust boundary keeps optimization algorithms out of direct command of valves and switchgear. Where the operator cannot be fast enough, gated graph neural networks localize the process anomaly and spiking networks classify arc flash and process bus injection below the microsecond.

    Psychometrics and Behavioral Modeling

This group works on the theory of the subject that behavioral modeling of operators and adversaries rests on. The papers formalize the Lacanian Four Discourses as a classification of threat actor motivation, read the calculus of the subject through topology, Dedekind cuts and the logic of suture, and derive the Loman Operator as a differential operator across the Real, the Symbolic and the Imaginary. A gated graph neural network parameterized by Cybernetic Big Five traits turns the signifying chain into something computable on time-series behavior. The earlier control-room specification of Musical Psychometric Notation sits here as the dated record of a position the later notation series revised.

    Grid Stability and Cascading Failure

We model how a power system loses stability and how far the loss travels. The papers treat synchronous inertia decay and system separation risk, frequency instability under high inverter penetration in ERCOT, WECC and the NSW transmission network, and percolation thresholds where interdependent utilities fail discontinuously. Higher-order tensor spectral analysis tracks blackout propagation across continental grids, and soliton and fractional viscoelastic damping models carry the same treatment to HVDC interconnects and gas pipelines. An incident response playbook states what detection, recovery and coordination have to look like when this happens.

    Unified Asset Graph

One computable graph has to hold the plant, its components and its electrical model at once. This group joins DEXPI 2.0 P&ID topology, CycloneDX 1.6 multi-BOM manifests and an IEC 61970 CIM profile into the schema G_CPDT, and tests the join with category-theoretic functors, differential form sheaves and a conformance suite with a reference implementation. Reference architectures for battery storage, pharmaceutical manufacturing and a rail depot put the join against three domains, including one where the CIM layer is thin and one where the domain splits. Blast radius traversal then runs consequence queries across all three ontologies rather than one at a time.

    Product Assurance and Conformance

Statutory conformance and third-party assurance are treated here as engineering problems with machine-readable answers. The papers formalize EU Cyber Resilience Act Article 14 reporting as a verifiable 24-hour CSIRT pipeline, tie VEX and VDR falsification to CycloneDX, and take firmware provenance back to a hardware root of trust. The Product Assurance Network papers then describe the market around that duty: a statutory jurisdiction matrix with its regulatory gaps, a bidding marketplace for conformity assessment, a machine-readable procurement API, and zero-knowledge attestations that prove a claim without exposing the design. A set of supply chain use cases runs the chain from OEM to operator.

    Adversary Modeling

An adversary is scored here rather than described. The TACAM matrix and the twelve-factor Adversary Threat Quotient give the scoring model, and CyHAZOP carries hazard analysis into cyber-physical node registers for power, cooling and safety. Epidemic thresholds, hypergraph percolation and higher-order simplicial contagion set out how an intrusion spreads through OT conduits and air-gapped networks. Papers on Nash defense horizons, Bayesian Stackelberg asset hardening and Bayesian persuasion in disclosure treat the attacker as a party that reacts to what the defender does.

    Musical Psychometric Notation

A composer scoring a scene decides in seconds what a character sounds like, and the reasons stay tacit. This group writes those reasons down: a psychological state held as nine numbers, and a stated mapping from that state to mode, tempo, dynamics, orchestration density and harmonic movement. The papers give the theory, its formal apparatus of state space, simplex and scalarization, the mapping parameter by parameter, and dialogue use cases running from play scripts to live panels. Surfaces for non-clinical expression, music therapy, a participant reading their own session and a live team score put the mapping in front of the people who can say where it is wrong, and a blinded listening pack is published so they can answer.

    Mathematical Foundations

This group holds the analytical and computational machinery the other groups cite. Kramers escape rate theory, sheaf cohomology for fault localization, entropy production away from equilibrium, non-Abelian gauge symmetries and Floer homology on invariant manifolds supply the physics side, beside a complete formula reference for the digital twin models. The stochastic side runs the Monte Carlo engine, graph-structured Latin Hypercube sampling for faster convergence on industrial attack graphs, and annealing with Ising Hamiltonians and Levy flights for grid islanding schedules. They sit together because a number quoted anywhere else in the corpus should be reproducible from something written down here.

Sponsored labs

Labs that test assumptions at machine speed.

Eigenia partners with technology companies and industry groups to establish labs for physical devices and their interactions. In them we build machine-speed falsification machines that test hypotheses and assumptions about infrastructure and technologies, to stay ahead of adversaries.
